Memorial Day for this year is Monday, May 28. When you think of Memorial Day, think of more than just barbecuing at home. Think of the men and women who served and sacrificed for this nation. Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day serves as the unofficial start for the summer, and was initially held on May 30 from 1868 through 1970. It became an official federal holiday in 1971. Just as Memorial Day comes along, people visiting Virginia’s Arlington National Cemetery, especially those who lost their loved ones in war, decorate their and our fallen heroes’ gravestones with U.S. flags.

Country is one of a number of genres in music that has honored our military in song. From Ernest Tubb to Lee Greenwood to Toby Keith, among others, country music definitely shows its support and patriotism.

As we observe our fallen veterans, here are the following country songs that honor and remember those who gave their lives when fighting overseas.

    1. Lee Greenwood – “God Bless the USA”

These are few of the country songs that don’t just either contain the words “America” or “soldier” or any other word that has to do with the subject of patriotism– each one means something, an honor and testament to every brave soldier who was in a life of danger when overseas, and eventually gave his or her life not just for you and me, but for every one of us.
